How It Works
Your team of up to 12 adults of all abilities compete for seven weeks. Six people on your team race two runs per night and are paired with opponents of equal speed and ability.
Side-by-Side Format
It's drag racing at its best. CityLeague Team Ski Racing is a seven-week series, including Qualifying Night, running in January through early March. Each team member races opponents on other teams of equal speed and ability. Teams are made up of mixed ability skiers and can have up to 12 members. Six members on each team race each week and are "pre-paired" prior to racing. Racers ski two runs each. Once on each dual course. Your team may have up to twelve members so that you're sure to field six per week. The best way is to have six "core" members with several alternates. We'll guarantee at least six weeks of racing with two make-up nights for possible weather postponements.
Racing
The second week is when it all starts getting really fun. After each captain has called, faxed or emailed in the six racers that will be competing that night, we input them into our program and produce a paired start list. Start lists must be received by 12:00 noon on the day of racing. Racers can check the start list in the lodge or at the race start before competition begins. We race from 7:30pm sharp to about 9:30pm each night. We reverse the order of running every other week (so the slower skiers get "rutless" courses too!); we call them Caboose Nights.
Points
Each of six racers on each team gets two runs per night —one on each course. Racers earn points by beating their opponent on each run...two points per victory. So, if all six racers win all their heats, a team can earn twenty-four "Dual Points". Then we take the five best race times and total them. The fastest team gets ten points, the second fastest gets nine...and so on. That's how we get "Team Points". Dual and Team Points are added and are cumulative. Teams earning high points at the end of the season win ski gear and plaques.
Qualifying
Race and qualify on your league night and area only.
On YOUR first night of racing IN YOUR LEAGUE ONLY, we'll qualify NEW RACERS TO THAT PARTICULAR LEAGUE AND NIGHT ONLY (returning racers to that league, area and night will already be qualified based on last year's data). Everyone is welcome to come on the first night of racing (for fun grudge matches), but only new racers are REQUIRED to be there.
- Random starting on a first come first serve basis. 7:30PM start. Qualifying runs slowly but is over fairly quickly. After everyone has at least one good run, second runs will be made available.
NEW QUALIFIERS SHOULD RUN FIRST. - Just one solid run is necessary. If you fall near the top, go back, do it again. If you fall near the finish, we most likely got an accurate time on you.
DETAILS on Qualifying: If you are NEW to your night and area (even if you raced in another league last year) you must re-qualify ON YOUR NEW NIGHT. If you did not race last year on YOUR night, you need to re-qualify. We just need one good run to get you placed in your league for pairing.
IF... you can't make it to Qualifying, you can come up on a subsequent week on YOUR league night as one of the six racers called in by your captain. You will race at the top of the start list and take two runs (just as if you were a normal racer). You can qualify up to and including our third paired racing week.
NO NEW QUALIFIERS AFTER THE THIRD PAIRED RACE WEEK.
RACE LOCATIONS
- Summit West course is directly under the Pacific Crest Quad right up from the new lodge.
- Alpental's course is to the far skiers left along side the little St. Bernard Chair.
